Electrical installation​

An electrician is trained and legally allowed to work on electrical systems. What he can do depends a bit on his qualification and registration, but generally this includes:

Domestic (homes & flats)

Install, repair, and replace sockets, switches, light fittings
Rewire part or all of a property
Install consumer units / fuse boards
Fault-finding and fixing electrical problems
Install smoke alarms, extractor fans, outdoor lighting
Carry out Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) (if qualified)

Commercial & Industrial

Wiring offices, shops, factories
Installing and maintaining 3-phase systems
Emergency lighting and fire alarm wiring
Data cabling (sometimes)
Machinery and control panels (industrial electricians)

Testing & Certification

EV charger installation
Solar PV systems and battery storage
Smart home systems (Nest, Hive, smart lighting)

Newer / Specialist Work (with training)

Electrical testing and inspection
Issuing safety certificates (EICR, Minor Works, Installation Certificates)
Ensuring work complies with BS 7671 (UK Wiring Regulations)

What he cannot do

Gas work (that’s Gas Safe engineers)
Major building/plumbing work (unless separately qualified)
Electrical work beyond his certification level

In the UK: carry out certain notifiable works without proper registration or Building Control notification
